How does exercise help with hormones?

“Exercise plays a major role in hormone regulation, impacting everything from metabolism to stress resilience,” explains Dr. Sabrina Solt, a naturopathic doctor and the owner and founder of Stem Cell Therapy Professionals. It also helps to improve cortisol balance since exercise is a stressor, “but when done right, it can help regulate cortisol,” Dr. Solt explains. “This is known as a hormetic stress. Short, intense workouts or restorative movements (like walking or yoga) help prevent chronic cortisol spikes that lead to fat storage, especially around the midsection.”

Regular exercise also improves estrogen and progesterone functions. Certain workouts may be more beneficial at different times of the menstrual cycle. “Strength training can support estrogen levels, while low-impact movement during the luteal phase may ease PMS symptoms,” Dr. Solt explains.

Fitness is just one piece of the puzzle when it comes to balancing hormones — here’s what else matters, according to. Dr. Solt:

Prioritize protein

Aim for at least three 30g servings per day, as well as healthy fats, to support hormone production.

Optimize sleep

Since poor sleep disrupts cortisol, insulin, and melatonin, try to get rest for seven to nine hours.

Manage stress

Daily movement, breath work, or cold exposure are excellent aids when managing stress. “Avoid endocrine disruptors like plastics, synthetic fragrances, toxic beauty/body products, and excess caffeine/alcohol,” Dr. Solt shares.

Malia Obama’s First Outing in 2025 Gives Fans a Glimpse Into Her Unique Workout Style https://www.sheknows.com/health-and-wellness/articles/1234814901/malia-obama-boho-exercise-wardrobe/ https://www.sheknows.com/health-and-wellness/articles/1234814901/malia-obama-boho-exercise-wardrobe/#respond Sat, 01 Feb 2025 17:30:58 +0000 https://www.sheknows.com/?p=1234814901 It’s clear Barack Obama and Michelle Obama’s eldest daughter, Malia Obama‘s street style is 100 percent boho, Gen Z chic; including her exercise wear. Truthfully, we didn’t think exercise gear could be boho-chic, but here we are, and Malia’s boho exercise gear has us inspired for 2025.

In photos obtained by DailyMail, we can see Malia hanging out with a pal, going on an evening stroll following a workout class. In the photos taken from earlier this week, we can see her looking so cool and, yet again showing off her boho-chic style. A trademark of Malia’s style is loose-fitting clothing and layers, something she donned after her workout.

In the photos, we can see her wearing a white workout tank top, with a loose-fitting gray sweater over top and a black leather trench coat. She also paired it with a black skirt, a green scarf, and black flats. Truly, she looks so cool in her workout gear, and it’s giving us some serious inspo for our next gym trip!

We love trying out a bunch of ways to stay fit, and to look good while doing so. In fact, per Hola, Malia does a unique type of workout called solidcore, which is all about working full body. So it’s no wonder she’s opted for looser clothes for better motion!

During a previous rare outing at the opening ceremony of the 50th Deauville American Film Festival on Sept 6, 2024, she talked about the event and her Vivienne Westwood look and how, surprisingly, she doesn’t know much about fashion, despite being a Gen Z style icon.

She said in a TikTok with Paris Match, “[It’s] Vivienne Westwood. Queen! It’s cool. I don’t know as much about fashion, but I’m happy to be wearing it.”

7 Ways to Stay Hydrated That Aren't Just Plain Water https://www.sheknows.com/health-and-wellness/articles/2055319/hydrating-drinks/ https://www.sheknows.com/health-and-wellness/articles/2055319/hydrating-drinks/#respond Mon, 13 Jan 2025 22:23:29 +0000 https://www.sheknows.com/?p=2055319 If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, SheKnows may receive an affiliate commission.

We’ve all heard about how important it is to prioritize our water intake, but on a hot summer (or dry winter!) day, you probably need even more H2O than you think. That’s not great news for those of us who aren’t fans of plain old water to begin with, but never fear — there are plenty of great hydration drinks available that do the trick just as well, if not better.

When you’re searching for a great hydration drink that isn’t water, it’s all about electrolytes, vitamins, and nutrients — and keeping the added sugar to a minimum. When you head down the beverages aisle, start by flipping over different drinks to get a look at the ingredients label. The fewer ingredients you see — and the more you can actually read and understand — the better.

Another option? Making your own hydration drinks, whether in a smoothie, juicer, or tea kettle. We’ve got plenty of recommendations (and a couple recipes!) below. But first, a reminder of why these hydration drinks and staying hydrated, in general, are so critical to your health any time of year.

Why Is Hydrating So Important?

“Your body is about 60 percent water, and during the summer months, we are constantly sweating and exerting energy,” registered dietitian Vanessa Rissetto, CEO of Culina Health, tells SheKnows. “If we aren’t properly hydrated we could end up in the hospital with dehydration, fatigue, and even heat stroke.”

“Water is important for just about every function and system in our body, from digestion to brain health,” adds registered dietitian Kaytee Hadley. That’s why symptoms of dehydration can vary so widely, she tells SheKnows; you might feel fatigued and have brain fog, or be experiencing muscle cramps or constipation. All of which is enough of a reason to keep pushing those fluids all summer (and all year) long, but the truth is, sometimes flavorless water does get a bit boring. So how do you stay hydrated without drinking water — plain ol’ unflavored water, that is?

We decided to ask the experts. Keep reading for other ways to stay hydrated besides drinking water, including the best hydrating drinks to sip when you’re feeling parched.

Plant waters

Coconut, maple, and cactus water are often touted as being hydrating and a better choice than sports drinks. These trendy drinks may have some benefits, but depending on your goals, you may want to consume them sparingly. “Coconut water is extremely hydrating but quite high in carbs and sugar, so it’s best to drink it in moderation,” says Jason Kozma, a celebrity personal trainer based in Santa Monica. And while maple syrup has a lower glycemic index than your typical granulated sugar, per the Cleveland Clinic (meaning it won’t cause as much of a spike in your blood sugar), it’s still “just a natural sugar,” Kozma says, “and there’s nothing special about it” in terms of helping with hydration.

Cactus water still has skeptics as well. Though the Mayo Clinic reports that there is research suggesting it can mitigate some of the effects of a hangover, it may still be too soon to label it a superfood. Still, if you particularly love one of these options and it helps you stay hydrated, go for it — just in moderation.

Infused water

Infused waters are a great, hydration-forward alternative to coconut, maple, or cactus water, and easy to make on your own, Kozma says. “Just add lemon, lime, mint, or watermelon for a refreshing combination,” he explains.

Hadley recommends this option too. “Make your own fancy ‘spa water’ by adding your favorite combination of fruit, cucumber, mint leaves, or basil to a pitcher of water,” she says. “Keep it in the fridge overnight and enjoy over the next one to three days.”

Iced tea or iced coffee

Caffeinated tea or coffee as a hydration drink? Yes, it’s true: these hot-weather staples can be great sources of antioxidants when freshly brewed, but some of us skip it because caffeine is often touted as a diuretic. Well, good news, because “this myth has been debunked,” says Tina Martini, fitness trainer, chef, and author of Delicious Medicine: The Healing Power of Food. Caffeinated beverages only have this diuretic effect — meaning they make you urinate more — when consumed in large amounts, Hadley says. “However, caffeinated drinks still have a net hydrating effect,” she explains, “so enjoying that iced latte this summer will, indeed, help you stay hydrated.”

Sports drinks

Athletes rely on sports drinks to help restore their electrolytes — potassium and sodium — lost through perspiration, but most of us won’t need something that hardcore during normal bouts of exercise. Plus, these drinks tend to be filled with things that we just don’t need. “Generally speaking, they contain too many chemicals,” says Martini. “It is better to make your own.” Or, add tiny pinches of pink Himalayan salt to your water. “It gets its color from Astaxanthin, a phytonutrient that removes free radicals from our bloodstream,” says Martini. Here is her healthy, electrolyte-rich hydration spin:

Classic “Greatorade”

1/2 cup water

1/4 cup lemon juice

1/4 cup orange juice

2 tablespoons lime juice

1-2 teaspoons honey, agave, or pure maple syrup

pinch of pink salt

pinch of cayenne pepper

½ teaspoon magnesium powder (if prone to muscle cramping use one teaspoon)

Whisk and enjoy!

Electrolyte Packets

Electrolyte supplements have been growing in popularity recently and there’s some research to suggest the can help athletes stay hydrated while working out. You have a lot of options to choose from, with Nuun tablets and Liquid IV leading the charge, and Rissetto loves the Hydrate + Electrolyte Singles from Laird Superfood. When it comes to hydration, “electrolytes are a good place to start,” she says.

Watermelon (or Watermelon Juice)

Packed with electrolytes, phytonutrients, antioxidants and a healthy dose of vitamin C, watermelon is a refreshing summer fruit that also happens to be 92 percent water — making it not just healthy but hydrating too. It isn’t always ideal to tote a chunk of melon around, but luckily, WTRMLN WTR has managed to squeeze all of its cold-pressed goodness — yes, even the rind! — in a slim bottle. It comes in six flavors and has no added sugars.

You can also get all of watermelon’s benefits from Martini’s post-workout drink aka “shrub.” “Shrubs are old-school drinks that have both a recovery benefit and are just downright refreshing,” says Martini. “They are making a comeback!”

Watermelon Recovery Shrub

1/2 cup coconut water or plain water

1/2 cup organic watermelon cubed, with the white part of rind (cut just the dark green off)

2 tablespoons fresh lime juice

2-3 mint leaves

1/2 tsp apple cider vinegar

pinch pink salt

Blend everything together until smooth and frothy. Serve in a chilled glass.

Vitamin water

Vitamin water is a popular sipper that seems like the perfect beverage, but unfortunatley, it isn’t so. “It is really more of an adult Kool-Aid, plus many of the vitamins are not absorbed into the body,” says Martini. Indulge in fruits and veggies instead, since they’re jam-packed with vitamins and fiber. If you plan on consuming water with added vitamins, make sure to check the labels because the sugar content can be really high.

Hydration tip: Use a straw

Whichever of these refreshing beverages you choose, consider grabbing a reusable or glass straw to sip it through. “Research suggests that drinking through a straw may actually help you consume more fluids without even realizing it,” Hadley says. Summer Stanley cups, anyone?

6 Tips for Relieving That Uncomfortable Inflammation You Feel When You Drink https://www.sheknows.com/health-and-wellness/articles/2967134/does-alcohol-cause-inflammation/ https://www.sheknows.com/health-and-wellness/articles/2967134/does-alcohol-cause-inflammation/#respond Mon, 06 Jan 2025 21:40:15 +0000 https://www.sheknows.com/?p=2967134 Whether you’re sipping a glass of wine over dinner or ordering a round of cocktails at the bar, the last thing you want to think about it is what that alcohol’s doing to your body. You already know you might be heading for a hangover tomorrow morning — might as well have fun while you can, right? And while we’re not here to ruin anyone’s buzz, there is another physical side effect of alcohol we should all be aware of: inflammation.

Far from just a buzzword in the wellness community, inflammation is actually your immune system’s response to a stressor, whether that’s a pathogen, an injury, actual mental stress, or just something that “does not sit well with our body, such as alcohol,” registered dietitian Emily Maus of Live Well Dietitian tells SheKnows. Now, inflammation isn’t always a bad thing; if you’re sick, inflammation is a sign that your body is working to get rid of the virus or bacteria. But if you’re experiencing chronic inflammation as a result of lifestyle factors, “it can mean the body is living in hyper-drive,” Maus explains. That can cause a wide range of physical and mental difficulties, from acne and painful periods to increased risk of diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.

So what does that have to do with alcohol? Well, most of us know that alcohol — as nice as it feels going down! — isn’t great for our bodies or minds. In fact, a growing body of evidence suggests that any amount of alcohol can be dangerous for your health, and the Surgeon General, Dr. Vivek Murthy, recently called for alcohol to carry warning labels for cancer. With sober curiosity and dry January trends on the rise, it seems like many Americans are getting the message and wondering what exactly alcohol is doing to their bodies. Turns out, inflammation is a big part of it.

Does alcohol cause inflammation?

Alcohol leads to inflammation in the body. How does it happen? As our body works to process alcohol, it creates “byproducts that can irritate and damage our gut and other organs, like the liver,” Romane Guerot, a registered dietitian and sports nutritionist at Foodvisor, tells SheKnows. “This irritation triggers an inflammatory response, similar to how your body fights off a scrape or a cold.”

Your body deals with alcohol via the liver, which is the organ responsible for filtering and ridding the body of poisonous substances like drugs and alcohol. You probably know that frequent consumption of alcohol can lead to liver damage, and that connection plays a part in inflammation as well. Chronic alcohol use impairs your body’s anti-inflammation defenses, which are connected to your liver, gut, and brain, scientists say. “The more frequently alcohol is consumed,” Maus explains, “the more sluggish the liver becomes, which can decrease production of anti-inflammatory cells.”

That inflammation can make itself known in a few different ways. Post-drinking inflammation might make you feel achy and sore, like after a big workout, Guerot explains. You might feel joint stiffness, fatigue, or an upset stomach as well. Sounds like a hangover to us.

What kinds of alcohol are worse for inflammation?

Unfortunately, all types of alcohol can cause an inflammatory response. In fact, “the type of alcohol doesn’t significantly impact how much inflammation it causes,” Guerot says. “It’s more about the amount you consume.” In other words, the more alcohol you drink and the more frequently you drink it, the more inflammation you’ll experience.

But if you’ve noticed that your hangovers are worse after a night of sugary cocktails, well, there’s a reason for that. Sugary alcoholic drinks may result in more inflammation, as sugar on its own is a known inflammatory ingredient. You’re basically combining two inflammatory ingredients, alcohol and sugar, so “limiting sugar heavy alcoholic beverages can be a better choice” for those looking to reduce inflammation, Maus explains. Similarly, the ultraprocessed foods we tend to reach for during or after drinking — think fried food, red meat, and sugary baked goods like cookies and brownies — can also contribute to inflammation, making the problem even worse.

Can I drink alcohol without experiencing inflammation?

Any amount of alcohol can cause inflammation, so if you really want to avoid inflammation and its unpleasant side effects, the solution is to not drink at all. But if you do want to imbibe every once in a while, moderation is key, Maus says — both in terms of how much you’re drinking and how frequently. It’s also best to drink after a meal. “Drinking on an empty stomach can spike blood sugar, which could also increase inflammation and reduce insulin response,” per a 2019 study, Maus noted. Opting for reduced sugar drinks can also help.

Of course, treating inflammation isn’t just about avoiding alcohol. What you eat also plays a huge role, which is where an anti-inflammatory diet can help; it’s an especially good idea to opt for anti-inflammatory foods like whole wheats, berries, leafy greens, and green tea after a night of drinking. Exercising regularly is key as well.

When it comes to alcohol, we know it’s not always easy to stop on a dime, even if you’re feeling those sluggish, uncomfortable symptoms of inflammation. Pay attention to how your body feels when you’re drinking and look for ways you can enjoy your favorite activities without leaning on alcohol. Try swapping out your cocktail for an anti-inflammatory mocktail (Maus recommends using ingredients like tart cherry, berries, or green tea) or an adaptogen beverage every once in a while. You might be surprised to noticed just how big of a difference it makes to your body and mind.

Doing Dry January? These 8 Celebrities Are Right There With You https://www.sheknows.com/health-and-wellness/slideshow/2697919/dry-january-celebrities/ https://www.sheknows.com/health-and-wellness/slideshow/2697919/dry-january-celebrities/#respond Fri, 03 Jan 2025 20:00:54 +0000 https://www.sheknows.com/?post_type=pmc-gallery&p=2697919 If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, SheKnows may receive an affiliate commission.

If you’ve spent any amount of time on social media lately, you’ve surely heard of Dry January. Like clockwork, the wellness experiment resurfaces in news and pop culture every New Year. But why are so many people choosing to cut out booze for the first month of the year?

Dry January is basically what it says on the tin: Participants abstain from any and all alcoholic beverages from January 1–31. The average U.S. adult has four alcoholic drinks a week, per a 2022 Gallup poll, so an entire month of no booze is not insignificant.

Importantly, Dry January is not designed to help people who are suffering from alcoholism. It’s typically approached as a finite willpower exercise, with many participants — this writer included! — using this period as a moment to reflect on their relationship to alcohol and prioritize their wholistic wellbeing. (“New year, new you,” right?) Sometimes, it’s employed by people who are “sober curious,” or thinking about cutting out alcohol altogether.

The negative health effects of regular alcohol consumption are well-documented, so it’s easy to see why Dry January appeals to so many of us. All things considered, one month is a pretty short amount of time. Abstaining from alcohol for that duration is attainable for most of us — not to mention good for our bodies, our sleep patterns, our mental health, and our wallets. And besides, there are plenty of delicious, ready-to-buy mocktails and adaptogen drinks on the market these days, ready to replace your usual mixed drinks.

Are you also embarking on a Dry January journey this year? It can be tough to stay motivated, but trust me, you are not alone. In fact, a number of high-profile celebrities have spoken publicly about experimenting with sobriety for a month. For some of them, Dry January even catalyzed a longer-term sobriety journey.

Below, read up on quotes from Tom Holland, Bella Hadid, Kelly Ripa, and other celebs who’ve sworn off alcohol for the month of January — and why, for some of them, the month-long experiment turned into a lifelong commitment to sobriety.

The 17 Best Adaptogen Drinks That'll Boost Your Mood, Sans Alcohol https://www.sheknows.com/health-and-wellness/slideshow/2526716/best-adaptogen-drinks/ https://www.sheknows.com/health-and-wellness/slideshow/2526716/best-adaptogen-drinks/#respond Fri, 03 Jan 2025 16:15:05 +0000 https://www.sheknows.com/?post_type=pmc-gallery&p=2526716 If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, SheKnows may receive an affiliate commission.

It’s hard to miss the shiny, non-alcoholic, adaptogen-infused drinks that have taken over the wellness world the last few years. They’re popular among the sober, sober-curious, dry January adherents, and anyone else drawn in by the relaxing, stress-relieving promises made on the labels. You might think it all sounds too good to be true, but there’s legit science and thousands of years of tradition behind the use of adaptogens, so if you thought these products are nothing more than a buzzy trend with pretty packaging, well, it might be time to reconsider.

While they’ve only recently become Instagram famous (and celeb-loved), adaptogens have been around for thousands of years, studies say — you’ve probably consumed them without even knowing it. Do names like ashwagandha, ginseng, and Reishi look familiar? Those are some common adaptogens. They can come in the form of plants or fungi and are packed with a ton of physical and mental benefits (which we’ll get into in a second).

We’ve found adaptogen drinks that range from hot lattes to sparkling water to ready-to-drink mocktails in a can, and a few have even become a staple in our editor’s fridges — the Oprah-loved Clevr Blends superfood lattes are a favorite. Adaptogen drinks are also super-versatile; one might give you your caffeine fix, another will keep you hydrated, yet another might give you the fun, fizzy feel of a cocktail minus the hangover tomorrow morning. But before we share our favorites, let’s explain what you’ll actually be drinking when you pop open one of these pretty cans.

What are adaptogens?

Adaptogens are plants or fungi that “help our bodies adapt to physical, emotional and environmental stress,” herbalist Vanessa Chakour tells SheKnows. They do this by regulating our hypothalamic-pituatary-adrenal axis (HPA-axis), which is basically your body’s stress response system: “the messaging between the brain centers that register a stress reaction and subsequently release hormones and neurochemicals to respond to that reaction,” naturopathic doctor Jannine Krause explains.

Different adaptogens have different effects, but broadly speaking, both experts say, adaptogens can:

  • increase antioxidant concentration and decrease inflammation, both of which occur when you’re under prolonged stress
  • help you feel calm and focused
  • increase your energy and stimulate hormone production
  • support your immune system

In short, “adaptogens help you regulate your response to stress,” Krause says, “whether it’s a state of being amped up, mind racing and not sleeping, or fatigued, lack of motivation with a depressed mood.” Essentially, adaptogens can help you restore your body’s balance.

Benefits of common adaptogens

There are lots of adaptogens out there, but some are more popular and commonly-found than others. Note that for adaptogens that have been studied, research suggests that you may need to take them consistently for six to 12 weeks before you start to notice any benefits, Chakour says. A small sampling of adaptogens you’ll see in the adaptogenic drinks ahead include:

Reishi mushrooms: Reishi is a mushroom found throughout the world. Studies have shown that it can “support our immune systems, help us respond to stress with more ease, aid digestion, and may have benefits for fighting cancer,” Chakour says. In traditional Chinese medicine, she adds, Reishi is used to treat chest tightness and improve memory, among other benefits.

Tulsi (aka Holy Basil): This herb is a “powerful corticosteroid modulator, meaning it has the ability to reduce circulating stress hormones in the body,” Chakour says. In studies, she adds, it’s been shown to be a “powerful anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immune system modulator, as well as a promising treatment for conditions ranging from liver disease to arthritis, to diabetes and cancer.”

Astragalus root: This sweet, nourishing root is all about helping out the immune system, studies say. It “can bolster immunity through white blood cell production, potentially shortening colds and flu, while combating fatigue by regulating cortisol and boosting energy,” Chakour says.

Ashwagandha: This shrub helps to “lower elevated cortisol and DHEA levels that cause anxiety and insomnia,” Krause says. (DHEA is a hormone that helps produce other hormones, including testosterone and estrogen, per Mayo Clinic.) In other words, it can help relieve stress in a major way, studies say.

Rhodiola: Rhodiola is an herb that’s “amazing for helping with recovery from a hard day at the office or in the gym,” Krause says. In studies, it’s been found to increase the body’s resilience to stresses while normalizing body functions, falling right in line with its traditional reputation of decreasing symptoms of depression and fatigue.

Schisandra Berry: Schisandra is “excellent for irritability, agitation and being quick to anger, especially in cases of PMS” and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (aka a more severe version of PMS), Krause says. Research has supported these brain benefits, with studies highlighting Schisandra’s “neuroprotective and cognitive enhancement properties.”

Panax ginseng: This herb can boost energy, Krause says, and studies have found that it may improve “psychologic function, immune function, and conditions associated diabetes,” according to American Family Physician. Other research has even found it effective at preventing cardiovascular disease.

Moringa: “Moringa is an energy boosting adaptogenic herb with antioxidant properties,” Krause says, and studies suggest that the plant helps to fight inflammation.

Maca: You may have heard of or tried maca powder before — it’s popular for good reason. Typically used as a root powder, maca “is well known as the hormone regulating and energy boosting adaptogenic herb,” Krause says, with studies showing that it’s effective at treating sexual dysfunctions, increasing fertility, and boosting memory and learning abilities.

Lion’s Mane: In studies, scientists have found that this mushroom can “significantly improve cognitive function and may even help to prevent dementia.

Are adaptogens safe?

Adaptogens have been used for thousands of years and generally considered quite safe, Chakour says. However, as with all medicinal substances, it’s important to talk to your doctor before you add adaptogens to your diet. Some adaptogens can interact with medications, Chakour says; Reishi, for example, may lower blood sugar levels, so taking it along with medications that do the same “might cause the blood sugar to drop too low.” Overall, she says, “it’s important to start with small quantities when trying any new herb or mushroom,” including the ones infused in these adaptogen drinks.

Best adaptogen drinks

Now that you know a bit more about what adaptogens actually are, let’s get to our favorite adaptogenic drinks. Ahead, we’ve rounded up the best adaptogen beverages you’ll want to stock up on so you can feel your best, whether you’re mixing up your hydration rotation or cutting back on alcohol. And once again, if you’re looking to add these non-alcoholic beverages to your self-care routine, make sure to check the label, see what adaptogens are included, and check with your doctor before sipping.

Why Mobility Should Be Your 2025 Health Resolution — And 5 Exercises To Get You Started https://www.sheknows.com/health-and-wellness/articles/2737980/best-mobility-exercises/ https://www.sheknows.com/health-and-wellness/articles/2737980/best-mobility-exercises/#respond Thu, 02 Jan 2025 18:30:48 +0000 https://www.sheknows.com/?p=2737980 Working out and staying fit isn’t just about grinding it out on the treadmill or lifting heavy weights. Part of a healthy, functional lifestyle is making sure to incorporate mobility into your everyday life.

Mobility, which refers to the range of motion we have within our different joints, “determines our ability to move freely in our regular activities, without feeling pain or pressure,” Aly Giampolo, CPT, co-founder and bounce instructor at the ness, tells SheKnows. “The more we can set ourselves up so that our bodies are working with our maximum mobility, the more comfortable we will be in our daily lives as we age.”

With the all the many benefits of mobility training — increasing range of movement, reducing muscle tension and soreness, reducing risk of injury — it’s no wonder that this fitness trend is becoming more and more popular. According to the 2024 Year in Sport report that fitness-tracking app Strava shared with SheKnows, stretching and mobility was a top health and fitness goal set by users for 2025. It’s a great resolution to set, but if you’re cringing at the thought of adding yet another wellness thing to your to-do list, we’ve got good news. Turns out, mobility training is one of those sneaky things that we can do on the daily and, according to Giampolo, “as often as you’d like.” Her preference? “Incorporating small mobility snacks into each day,” she says. “Finding 10 or 15 minutes to work on a handful of mobility exercises into your day is the perfect way to ensure your joint health and range of motion are always at their best.”

Ten or 15 minutes to better functional health, fewer injuries, and more flexible muscles? Sign us up. If improving your mobility is on your 2025 to-do list, keep reading for Giampolo’s favorite mobility exercises that you can do right now.

Squat knee drive

How to do it: Start standing hips width or slightly wider. Perform a squat by sending your hips down and back as if you were sitting into a chair behind you. Then, drive through your left heel to straighten your left leg and stand tall, while driving your right knee up to a march in front of you creasing at the hip. Repeat with the other leg. Alternate side to side.

Why it’s important: According to Giampolo, this exercise is “a great way to work on hip and knee mobility,” she says. “The squat moves you into a deep, functional range of motion for the lower body, while the knee drive increases your mobility through each hip and simultaneously strengthens your stabilizing side.”

Down dog to plank

How to do it: Start in downward-facing dog, reaching your hips high, your heart to your thighs, and dropping your heels to the floor (or as close as you can get). Then, shift your weight forward into a plank position, stacking your shoulders over your wrists, your hips in line with shoulders, and extending a long line of energy from head to heels. Reach your tailbone up and return back to your downward facing dog position. Repeat.

Why it’s important: This move is the perfect combo of stretching and getting strong. “Down-dog is a wonderful position to stretch out the backs of the legs, open the chest, and relieve tension from the neck,” Giampolo explains. “Plank strengthens the body. The shifting of weight from one position to the other keeps your positions dynamic creating heat in the body and increasing mobility.”

Exercise: Plank, lunge, & twist

How to do it: Start in a plank position with shoulders over wrists and hips in line with shoulders. Step your right foot forward to the outside of your right hand into a lunge. Spiral your right hand upwards, rotating from the belly button all the way up through the fingertips to stack shoulder on shoulder. Reset your hand down and reset your foot to plank. Repeat on the other side.

Why it’s important: Don’t get intimidated by the plank portion — this move feels delicious through your whole body. “Plank creates heat in the body, while the lunge creates openness and stretch for the hips,” Giampolo says. “The addition of the twist helps with spinal mobility by rotating the entire upper body from the belly button through the top of the head as the gaze looks towards the fingertips.”

Exercise: Supported side plank spiral

How to do it: Start in your supported side plank position with your left knee and left hand rooted on the floor, your right leg extended long to your side, your right arm extended up to the ceiling, and your waistline reaching up towards the ceiling as if a string were pulling your ribs upward. (Basically a side plank, but with your bottom knee on the floor for support!) Spiral your right arm underneath your left armpit, folding your torso downwards, and re-extend the right arm upwards to re-stack your body in one vertical line. Repeat 10 times on each side.

Why it’s important: “The supported side plank position creates strength in the body, but the addition of the spiral creates mobility for the back body, shoulders, and neck as they find their full rotation down and up,” Giampolo explains.

Exercise: Superman with scapula retraction

How to do it: Start laying on your belly with your arms reaching out in front of you. On your exhale, squeeze your glutes to lift your arms and legs up off the floor like a Superman ab move. While in this hovering position, bend your elbows and pull your arms back towards your sides, feeling your scapula (the muscles in your upper back along your spine) activate. Extend your arms back in front of your body, then lower yourself back to your starting position and repeat.

Why it’s important: “Superman is a wonderful way to increase mobility and strength in our back body,” Giampolo says of this ab-and-back move. “The additional scapular retraction as you fly your wings strengthens your upper back even more, while allowing you to explore your full range of motion.”

An Honest Review of the Hot Chocolate Collagen Drink Designed To Help You 'Sleep Well' https://www.sheknows.com/health-and-wellness/articles/1234765880/kailo-collagen-sleep-well-review/ https://www.sheknows.com/health-and-wellness/articles/1234765880/kailo-collagen-sleep-well-review/#respond Mon, 09 Dec 2024 15:10:00 +0000 https://www.sheknows.com/?p=1234765880 If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, SheKnows may receive an affiliate commission.

We all know winter is the season for hot chocolate. Growing up, I used to gulp down all the hot cocoa I could get my hands on, whether it was a cup of Starbucks, some quick-prepped Swiss Miss, or a fancy homemade blend — no matter the time of day, I was ready for a rush of chocolate-flavored holiday joy. But as an adult, it’s sadly become clear that bedtime hot chocolate isn’t the best choice for me. Given my struggles with insomnia and sleep anxiety, the last thing I need before bed is a sugar rush, so I’d sadly relegated this bedtime tradition to the past. That is, until I came across KAILO’s Sleep Well chocolate collagen supplement.

I’m a big fan of protein supplements and warm, sleep-inducing drinks (sleepy tea has been a godsend), but I’d never tried a product that combined them. KAILO’s Sleep Well supplement not only features 15 grams of collagen (a type of protein that strengthens your skin, muscles, bones, and tissue) but also has calming herbs like ashwagandha, chamomile, lemon balm, passion flower, hops, and Chinese skullcap to promote better sleep. Magnesium glycinate and tart cherry, which some studies say can promote better sleep, also make appearances in the nutrition info. And the supplement is flavored with cocoa and coconut milk to give it that sweet, hot chocolate taste I always crave this time of year. So of course, when KAILO sent me a sample of their cozy sleep supplement, I had to try it out.

KAILO Collagen Sleep Well Supplement Review

KAILO Collagen Sleep Well Supplement

Kailo Collagen Sleep Well Supplement Review

I tried KAILO’s Sleep Well Collagen Supplement for about seven days, drinking it with the recommended 1 1/4 cups of warm almond or oat milk. Here’s my honest review:

How does it taste?

Let’s start with my initial draw to this supplement — the promise of a hot chocolate-y taste. I’m happy to report that, with unsweetened almond and oat milk, KAILO’s Sleep Well supplement has a lovely, lightly sweet taste. It manages to be somehow buttery and rich without getting too sweet. The chocolate taste isn’t super strong, but it still felt like a cozy hot cocoa to my taste buds. For more sweetness, one Amazon reviewer said they added honey, which I’ll definitely be trying; other reviewers noted that the taste wasn’t quite as good when mixed with water, so I’ll be sticking with my milk mixer. And as someone who has tried many a protein supplement, I’ll also report that KAILO doesn’t come with the off-putting aftertaste that some other brands have.

What’s the texture?

Not all drink mixes are created equal, and that’s especially true when it comes to texture — there’s nothing that turns me off a supplement powder faster than a gritty feel in my mouth, or a powder that clumps up and doesn’t dissolve well. KAILO doesn’t have either of these problems. It blended nicely with my warm milk, to the point that there were no clumps after about a minute of stirring. My drink was smooth and creamy by the time it was cool enough to sip, and even got a little foamy on top like a real cup of hot cocoa.

Did it help me sleep?

I can’t say KAILO’s Sleep Well supplement knocked me out like a melatonin gummy, but it did help me wind down — whether that was due to the herbal, relaxation-promoting ingredients or the simple fact of its warm, creamy, comforting flavor. KAILO actually notes that this supplement won’t make you drowsy, but does contain “ingredients that will calm your nervous system” — which was about my experience. While not exactly sleepy, I felt calmer and less anxious after drinking it. It helped that I found it very easy to fit the Sleep Well supplement into my nighttime routine. I sipped it while reading, watching YouTube, or journaling, making sure to drink it at least an hour before bed to avoid middle-of-the-night bathroom runs.

One benefit I really liked: how satisfying the supplement was, which is a sleep-related plus since I always sleep better when I’m full. It offers 15 grams of collagen protein (plus the fat and protein in the milk), so I expected it to fill me up, but I found it was perfect for nights when I felt a bit peckish but didn’t want to commit to a late-night meal or random snack. It was nice to know I could sip on the soothing, sleep-promoting drink and trust that it wouldn’t keep me up or give me stomach upset.

Do I recommend KAILO Sleep Well collagen supplement?

I loved the taste, texture, and relaxing qualities of this sleep-collagen supplement. It makes a great addition to any bedtime routine, especially for those of us with a sweet tooth who tend to get hungry at night. While it did help me relax, I wouldn’t say it was a massive game-changer for my sleep. It’s also on the more expensive side, currently listed at $99, so I’d file this one as a splurge purchase — a delicious, healthy, relaxing treat, but not a must-have for good sleep.
