There are a few things to consider when shopping for a maternity photoshoot dress, the first being what time of year you’re taking said photos. You want to dress accordingly for the weather, specifically if your vision includes outdoor snapshots.

Miscarriage is a heavy but important topic, so when celebrities share their own experiences, the impact is huge.

According to the Mayo Clinic, miscarriage is the “spontaneous loss” of pregnancy before the 20th week (with most occurring before the 12th week), and anywhere between 10 and 20 percent of known pregnancies end within this stage. The health organization estimates that the actual number is higher because miscarriage can occur before a person even realizes they are pregnant. While every case is different, notes Mayo, miscarriage usually happens because the fetus has not developed the way it should, and certain conditions such as maternal diabetes, hormonal problems, and infections can contribute.

Despite how common it is for women to miscarry, pregnancy loss isn’t always an accepted topic of discussion. In 2020, Meghan Markle revealed her own miscarriage in a New York Times essay, which occurred after the birth of her son Archie, 3, and before the birth of daughter Lilibet, 1 (whom she shares with husband Prince Harry).

“Losing a child means carrying an almost unbearable grief, experienced by many but talked about by few,” wrote Markle. “In the pain of our loss, my husband and I discovered that in a room of 100 women, 10 to 20 of them will have suffered from miscarriage. Yet despite the staggering commonality of this pain, the conversation remains taboo, riddled with (unwarranted) shame, and perpetuating a cycle of solitary mourning.”

Markle added, “Some have bravely shared their stories; they have opened the door, knowing that when one person speaks truth, it gives license for all of us to do the same. We have learned that when people ask how any of us are doing, and when they really listen to the answer, with an open heart and mind, the load of grief often becomes lighter — for all of us. In being invited to share our pain, together we take the first steps toward healing.”

If we’re being totally transparent, the entire experience of pregnancy can be pretty strange. Some things happen to your body that are magical, yes — but other things happen that you simply will never fully wrap your brain around. During my first pregnancy, I would routinely send my husband to the store late at night to stock up on canned spinach and vinegar, which I would essentially eat as though (combined) they were like a bowl of cereal. During my second pregnancy, there were not enough Now and Later candies in the world to satisfy my pregnancy sweet tooth.

It’s fascinating, right? It’s also a great equalizer. Though celebrities may not share many day-to-day issues with the rest of us, they’re at the whim of their hormones during pregnancy too — and this makes for some pretty wacky celebrity cravings. One of our favorite myths is the idea that all mid-life pregnancies are extremely dangerous and should be avoided at all costs. But, spoiler: That isn’t necessarily true. (By the way, same goes for those other pregnancy myths: Sweets will hurt the baby! Eating a whole pineapple will make you give birth! That half glass of wine you just drank in your third trimester means you’re a terrible mom! Don’t exercise! Stay away from coffee! The list goes on.)

While a pregnant person older than 35 is considered “advanced maternal age,” according to the Mayo Clinic, other factors such as lifestyle choices (using alcohol or cigarettes), health conditions (high blood pressure, obesity), or carrying multiple babies also contribute to a high-risk pregnancy. And it goes without saying that many women, either older or younger than 35, need reproductive assistance to get pregnant.

However, being of a certain age doesn’t always mean that you can’t give birth a perfectly healthy baby. And, at any age, surrogacy is a perfectly viable option. Whatever the route to becoming a mom, many of these celeb moms agree that there are definite advantages to delaying motherhood — just ask Salma Hayek, who gave birth to her daughter Valentina at age 41, which is what she calls perfect timing. “When you turn 40, it’s a lot easier than 30,” Hayek told USA Today in 2009. “They lied when they said you get old when you’re 40. How to Find Holiday Joy When You’re Struggling to Get Pregnant

The holiday season is a time of joy, celebration and love. When you’re struggling to get pregnant, however, the so-called happiest season can be one of painful reminders instead. Yet there are still ways you can find joy in the holiday season while dealing with infertility.

Do Things You Enjoy

The holiday season is supposed to be joyous, so why not do only things that bring you joy? Take the time to do seasonal activities you love, like relaxing by the fire or baking dozens of cookies. Try to remember the things you loved about the holiday season before infertility reared its ugly head, and focus on those.

You can also use the holiday season to take a trip with your spouse. Even a weekend “staycation” at a nice local hotel can do wonders. If you really want to go big, a romantic getaway to a tropical destination will get your mind off holiday sadness and give you some great memories. Or just tell everyone you’re going out of town and then hole up in your house with a weekend-long TV binge and plenty of snacks!

Just Say No

There are some holiday events you know are going to be painful, such as children’s plays or family events with tons of kids. It’s OK to decline when you know the experience will be hard to get through! Don’t feel guilty about declining; your friends and family will understand. If they don’t, they will get over it! You don’t owe anyone an explanation. You need to focus on protecting your mental and emotional health this season, however that looks for you — and even if it looks “rude” to others.

Prepare for Questions

If you do attend a family get-together, be prepared for some intrusive questions and unsolicited advice that will be difficult and insensitive most of the time. Usually the person asking doesn’t realize that, and feel like their questions and “advice” are well-meaning, but their good intentions don’t make it any less hurtful. Again: you don’t owe anyone an explanation. The power is in your hands, and only you get to decide what to share. You can simply say you’re not ready to start a family, and leave it at that. If you’re comfortable with a little more transparency, you can opt to explain to friends and family what you are going through. Also, show your appreciation to loved ones who are supporting you during this difficult time.

Do a ‘Digital Detox’ During the Holidays

Social media can feel like a landmine at any point in the year, but especially during the holiday season. Take a hiatus if you can, or at the very least, only check social media when you feel that you’ve got the emotional bandwidth to handle a post that might upset you.

You can also do the same with the holiday cards you get in the mail: feel free to save them all in a stack for later, or just unceremoniously toss them into the trash. No one will ever know!

Spend Time With Your Spouse and Friends
