During the summer, throwing a few burgers on the grill makes for a quick and easy dinner. But sometimes the basic ketchup, yellow mustard, and cheddar cheese combo just doesn’t hit the taste buds in all the right spots. That’s why Martha Stewart likes to prepare her burger patties (specifically, her turkey patties) from scratch because she puts some of the toppings directly into the burger meat to pack each bite with a flavorful punch.
“If you’re looking for a turkey burger that is flavorful (not bland), you need to try our recipe,” the caption of a recent Martha Stewart Instagram post reads. “These turkey burgers don’t need much prep; just mix and form the burgers and they are ready for the grill in 10 minutes or less. To make sure the patties are juicy and tasty, we add shredded Gruyère cheese because it is the best cheese for melting.”
To make Stewart’s turkey burgers, start with fresh turkey meat and add a handful of shredded Gruyère. You can use whichever cheese you like best, but pick something that melts like Gruyère does to get that creaminess. Stewart also likes to add chopped scallions, breadcrumbs, Dijon mustard, and minced garlic to the burger meat before mixing everything together and forming her patties.
You can put the patties right on the grill once they’re formed and eat them as is on toasted buns. Or, you can add additional toppings like pickles, mayonnaise, or aoli, tomatoes, lettuce, or a bit of red onion. You could also ditch the bun and eat the patties plain or within a lettuce wrap situation to cut back on your carb intake.
“These are the best! I make them all the time. Recipe in Martha’s Grilling book,” one person commented on the Instagram post.
You could also use this recipe to make ground turkey meatballs for your upcoming pasta night. Swap out the Gruyère with parmesan to give the meatballs a bit more tang that goes great with red sauce.
